STAIRWELL SOUTH, RIVERPARK BUILDING, 2003

The employee health and wellness committee asked me to improve a grim, gray campus stairwell to encourage employees to climb the stairs instead of using the elevator. I had each floor painted a different color and selected poetry that employees volunteered to stencil on the walls. A muralist created a decorative icon on each landing and I installed a digital sound recording of a babbling brook. We measured a 15% increase in usage, a phenomenal success.
